The Denver Guide

The Mile High City is one of the healthiest places to live in the United States.
But, Denver residents don't just head to the gym every day, drinking smoothies. They have an active, outdoorsy lifestyle that's supplemented by arts and culture, dining choices galore, sports, recreation, shopping, and so much more.

Denver, Colorado

Denver was originally known as Denver City. Back in 1867, its name was abbreviated and the "City" was no longer needed. In 1876, it was admitted to the Union and was a major service and supply hub.
The greater metropolitan area is Denver-Aurora-Lakewood. While Denver is the most populous city in Colorado, it's the elevation that attracts more attention. It's not called the "Mile High City" for nothing, as Denver has a one-mile above sea level elevation making it the highest major city in the United States.
If you're a first-time or infrequent visitor to the area, the elevation may initially wreak havoc on your head. Headaches are a common occurrence for tourists, at least for the first day or so.

Denver Longevity

Denver residents boast an average 80.02 life expectancy. Purina had it right when it designated Denver as the healthiest city in the country. Yes, there's plenty to do but, if you live there, you tend to pick many outdoor activities.
Hiking, biking, jogging trails, they're all part of the Denver lifestyle. All you have to do is look at the surroundings to know that there's something special about this Colorado gem.
Whether you frequent Lake Sloan, take in the National Western Stock Show (aka the biggest in the world), or simply enjoy being out in the mild temperatures and low humidity that are trademarks of Denver, there are plenty of things to do and enjoy whether you're a visitor or lifetime resident. We hope our Denver City Guide will provide you with something new and exciting about the Mile High City.

Denver Guide to Arts and Entertainment

If there's one thing that we've learned at OTL after being Denver's seat filler club for more than seven years now, it's that Denver is a metropolis for events and entertainment.

Plays, musicals, comedy, music, sports, cabaret, and so many other things are always on the event calendars in the greater Denver area. Denverites can take advantage of big touring shows but they're also fortunate to have local talent that rivals some of the best.

Denver Comedy Clubs

Laughter is everywhere through Denver's comedy clubs that provide some of the biggest names or improv shows that will make your stomach ache from all of the funnies.

Voodoo Comedy Playhouse, Comedy Works, and non-traditional venues like The Clocktower Cabaret all provide comedy shows and typically offer food options as well. If it's been a while since you've had dinner and a show, maybe it's time!

Denver Area Theater

You may be familiar with The Buell Theater at the Denver Center for Performing Arts. The Buell offers some of the most well-known productions like Wicked, Cats, Hello, Dolly!, and Les Miserables.

For a more intimate experience, there's the Garner Galleria Theatre or the Space Theatre (theatre in the round) at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

In addition to theaters, though, Denver has its own in-town theater companies. The productions by these companies primarily focus on local, homegrown talent but you probably can't tell the difference between a Denver production and a national production.

Curious Theatre Company, Germinal Stage, and Buntport Theatre, the list goes on so it's never off-season for plays and musicals.

Denver Area Sports

The Colorado Rockies and the Denver Broncos, need we say more? Well, there's a lot more to say because Denver fans have their pick of teams to root for year-round.

The Rockies may represent Major League Baseball, and the Broncos, the NFL, but there are five other professional teams in the Denver area.

NHL fans can take in Colorado Avalanche games at the Pepsi Center. The Colorado Rapids provide Major League Soccer action at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Overlapping football and baseball, why not head to the Pepsi Center for the NBA's Denver Nuggets. Or, if you prefer lacrosse or rugby, you're set there as well. The Denver Barbarians were established as Denver's rugby club in 1967 and the Glendale Raptors are part of Major League Rugby.

The Denver Outlaws and Colorado Mammoth are two lacrosse teams in the Mile High City. The Mammoth also play at the Pepsi Center and the Outlaws are home at Mile High Stadium.

Outdoor Denver Guide

You don't need a guide to know that Denver is an outdoor-lovers paradise. Mild winters with the rare snowfall are prevalent. But, you also don't need to travel far with your ski gear as Colorado is known for its famous mountain ranges.

One of the best things about living in or visiting Denver is the comfortable year-round climate. It allows you to take advantage of golf courses, parks, walking trails, and even outdoor cafes for the majority of the year.

Denver Restaurants

Yet Another Denver Restaurant Lands at the Airport

Food is just a fact of life. But, it's also a way of life, and you don't have to be a true "foodie" to want the best options.
The Source provides you with plenty of options, 13 to be exact, with options like Acorn Restaurant. The Source is an artisan food market located in a landmark building from the 1880s. Take your pick of food vendors or just hang out at the bar and have a drink with some friends.
While we're on the subject of 19th-century buildings, The Fort Restaurant was built in 1963 but is a replica of Bent's Fort, which is a fur trade fort built in 1833. All of the wood pieces from the doors to chairs were hand carved to replicate the same style. The Fort features steakhouse cuisine.
If you're craving fast food, you may want to try something a little more offbeat than McDonald's. Larkburger may be considered a chain. But, except for one Kansas-based and one Missouri-based location, it's solely for Coloradoans. Larkburger began in Vail and is known for the truffle-scented burger and truffle fries. Are you noticing a pattern here? Forget the side of slaw, edamame is on the menu.
Fast food, fine dining, and unique culinary experiences are prevalent in the Denver restaurant guides.
