Boca Chita Key Campground
Tent Camping in South Florida – Miami
Located right on the outskirts of Miami, the Boca Chita Key campground is a part of the Biscayne National Park. When staying here, you can have quick access to the big city while still staying in a pristine national park.
The campground actually resides on an island within the park and is an oasis. There’s also a larger campground known as Elliott Key at the other end of the park. Staying at either one gives you access to a campsite and the availability to reserve a boat spot at the marina.
This is one of the best campgrounds in South Florida for tent camping, as the only way to get to the island is by boat. Think of it as a Gilligan’s Island experience – but you won’t be stranded and coconut cream pies aren’t provided.

Boat Camping in South Florida – Key Biscayne
With property on the ocean and a signature lighthouse, the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is a fantastic place to camp in the area. It features quick access to beaches and fishing opportunities. So, it’s an excellent spot for anyone with a boat (or a boat rental).
Technically, it’s located in Key Biscayne. So, you will be on an island just off of Miami. You will be in your own natural oasis while the perks of the big city are a short drive away.

Two Tips for Visiting Campgrounds in South Florida
1. Have Access to a Vehicle
As we have already laid out, camping in south Florida keeps you close to Miami and other Florida hotspots. So, having a vehicle that can move you around effectively is key. Depending on the type of camping you are doing, this might be a bit tricky. However, you might want to think about renting a car or bringing one in tow. It will be well worth it.
2. Be Ready for Anything
South Florida is a gorgeous place, but the weather can change on a dime. That means you’ll need to be prepared to call audibles and change plans when something comes up. It’s not always a bad thing, but heavy rain can come in and spoil outdoor activities in an instant. Fortunately, though, there are so many things to do in the area that you have plenty of backup plans.
