An Intro to Home Meal Kit Delivery

by | Mar 23, 2019

Many benefits to home meal delivery

I received my first introduction to home meal delivery when my 76-year-old mother signed up for Blue Apron. While it was a convenience for her, she had another reason for giving the concept a try.

When you are part of a home meal delivery club, you not only receive the ingredients but detailed step-by-step instructions, including pictures to guide you through the process.

Now, my Mom is one of the last people to need recipe cards. She's been whipping up cakes, casseroles, gourmet sauces, and pretty much anything that you can think of for more than 50 years - and without using recipes. She's one of those people that instinctually knows how to put ingredients together.

So, why would she sign up for Blue Apron?

Cooking lessons

My Mom's reason isn't an obvious one. It's because she's raising my two teenage nephews and wanted to delegate some of the cooking responsibilities.

Blue Apron has taught them cooking techniques and recipes that they end up wanting to repeat without a Blue Apron box in hand. Their palletes are more sophisticated and they're willing to try new things because they are the chefs, and are extremely proud of their "creations."

Everything is in the box

I probably wouldn't have even considered trying home meals until I watched them unpack the ingredients, which include absolutely everything you need, right down to the pat of butter that goes into the sauce.

The dishes offer something a bit different, and they're absolutely delicious. It's also nice to know that you won't have to stop midstream and run back to the store because you forgot an important ingredient.

No delivery required

Recently, I came across Home Chef meals in my local Smith's grocery store and jumped on the opportunity to be as good of a chef as my nephews. Like Blue Apron, Home Chef pre-measures all of the ingredients and gives you everything you need to put together a balanced dinner.

As everyone's lives are so busy these days and sometimes the last thing we want to do is go through the grocery store and try to remember everything we need for that night's dinner, a home meal kit can be just what the doctor ordered.

Flexibility and Incentives

Most of the subscription services allow you to pick two or three nights of meals each week and the ingredients will typically last a few days, so you're not tied into having to cook if you're just not feeling it. But, knowing you have everything you need for a quick and yummy dinner, can be well worth the $8.99 to $11.99 average that you pay for each meal.

Blue Apron is one of the original providers. But, a whole slew of new options is now on the table. If you're interested in giving home meal delivery a try, most of them offer a new member offer, and you can cancel anytime if it's just not fitting into your lifestyle.
