Home Meal Delivery – Delicious, Affordable, and Fun!

In today’s world, everything is brought to our front door. We can run out of a roll of paper towels and, lo and behold, Amazon.com or any number of grocery stores are just waiting for us to pull up their site and order some. In a matter of hours, or even less, there’s a six-pack of Bounty on our doorstep.

The convenience is certainly worth the price of delivery.

Shopping Inspiration

Don’t get me wrong, though. I like walking through stores, even grocery stores. It’s a chance to get a little exercise, be around people, and see and compare the items on the shelves. I need inspiration from time to time, or I’d be eating the same pasta with grape tomatoes every night.

I’m fortunate, though, in that I work from home and have some flexibility in when I can shop. I’m not forced into a 5 or 5:30 pm trip to Smith’s, Albertson’s or Target for some fresh produce and dinner ingredients. Even so, though, there are times when I treasure the convenience of something coming to me so I don’t have to stop what I’m doing and get in the car. That’s where home meals come in handy.

Grocery bag in a box

You get to pick and choose what you like to eat, and everything is assembled in one nice, neat box for you. You get meal cards and all of the ingredients right down to the butter and spices.

We have another post with a handy list to many of the top home meal delivery providers that you may want to check out, but, additionally, it’s beneficial to get some expert opinions on the best of the best. So, the following article snippets are by Self, CNET, and Pocket-lint. They compare and contrast a variety of meal delivery services and give their opinions on the ones that are better than others.

Sun Basket is a top pick

While we’ve hit some of the high notes as far as the gist of the article, and links are provided so you can check out their entire breakdowns. You may be surprised to see Sun Basket as one of the top picks. Pocket-lint also introduces Amazon Fresh, which is no longer just limited to Seattle home chefs.

If you’re interested in giving the home meal delivery a try, there are plenty of options that should suit your needs. The only thing that I noticed is lacking, is individual meals. You have to buy for two or four. Oh well, leftovers are time savers too!

(Not to mention no leaving the house or planning ahead.)

The field is growing, with specialty purveyors focusing on vegan foods, seasonal ingredients, and smoothies. We tried the best meal delivery services out there and we gotta say, they made us feel like bonafide healthy chefs. Here’s what we learned:

Sun Basket

Why It Rocks:

The folks at Sun Basket prioritize quality ingredients above all else, and it shows. The produce is all organic, the meat is antibiotic-free with no added hormones, and the seafood is wild-caught and sustainable. On top of that, they offer a variety of different meal plan options catering to special diets such as paleo, vegan, vegetarian, and pescatarian (you can opt to mix-and-match recipes from all of these different menus, too!). All meals are nutritionist-approved. Fans of the program praise the freshness of the meals, and note that the recipes are simple enough for weeknights, while also being creative and interesting. Offerings range from classics like chicken milanese and bucatini carbonara, to fun new combinations like farro risotto and roasted shrimp with ajo blanco sauce. Weekly deliveries arrive in packaging that’s 100 percent recyclable and compostable, which is another major win. Choose between the classic plan—which serves two to four people and offers paleo, gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, diabetes-friendly, and more speciality meal plan options—or the family plan, which serves four and offers kid-friendly meals as well as a vegetarian option.
