Three Versions of The Nutcracker in Austin - and More Holiday Fun

The Nutcracker is an annual holiday tradition in most cities, and Austin is no exception. In fact, Austin takes the show to the limits with three versions of Clara and the Nutcracker/Prince.

The Nutcracker Version One
Ballet Austin and the Austin Symphony Orchestra

For more than 50 years now, Ballet Austin has performed the holiday classic. Live musical accompaniment is provided by the Austin Symphony Orchestra. For a classic holiday experience that'll take you away to a fantasy world, tickets range from $29 to $99.

The Nutcracker Version Two
Tapestry Dance's Of Mice and Music: A Jazz Tap Nutcracker

Dates: December 12th through December 22nd

Venue: The Long Center

The Long Center comes alive with two of the three interpretations of The Nutcracker in Austin.

In this unusual take, Clara's story unfolds with jazz and dancing that are quite different than the typical ballet presentation. The young girl is introduced to dance when she's gifted with a pair of tap shoes. To see how it all plays out, tickets start at $34.

Austin Children's The Nutcracker

Dates: December 20th through December 22nd

Venue: Dell Fine Arts Theatre, St. Andrew's Episcopal School

This particular show may not have the longevity of the original production at the Long Center. But Austin City Ballet's dancer's ages eight to 18 have been performing this version for 19 years now. Tickets are $35 for adults and $20 for children.

It's a Wonderful Life - Classic Radio Cast
Penfold Theatre

Dates: November 29th through December 21st

Venue: Old Settlers Association of Williamson County

Penfold Theatre takes you back in time to 1946 when George Bailey is shown what life would be like without him.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical

Date: December 29th, 2019

Venue: HEB Center

For just one afternoon, some familiar cartoon faces will come to life on stage at the HEB Center in Cedar Park with the live musical version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

You'll see brand new interpretations of Abominable Snow Monster, Clarice, and Yukon Cornelius. Of course, Rudolph, Santa, and Mrs. Claus are also part of the fun.

Tickets run from $38 to $68 while they last.

Armadillo Christmas Bazaar

Dates: December 3rd through December 24th

Venue: Palmer Events Center

For just $10, you'll have access to some of the most unique gifts in Austin. The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar is a holiday shopping tradition. It's like an upscale tradeshow with one-of-a-kind pieces.

You can buy jewelry, pictures, clothing items, and all kinds of thoughtful stocking stuffers. Grab a snack at the concession stand and get yourself energized to power shop.

Gingerbread Village and Holiday Goodies
Four Seasons

Dates: November 25th through December 25th

Venue: Four Seasons Hotel

Every year, the Four Seasons in Austin goes all out to immerse guests and visitors in the spirit of the holidays. The lobby area features the annual Gingerbread Village. It's accessible 24 hours a day and showcases some of the best cookie architects around. You'll find some intricate sweet homes that are decorated to the nines.

While it won't take long to check out the entries, why not plan on grabbing lunch at Live Oak. You'll have a great meal, accompanied by an amazing view.

Four Seasons also rolls out an impressive Christmas Day Buffet from 10 am to 8 pm. For $95 per person ($45 for children), you'll have a one-of-a-kind, all-you-can-eat. Some of the Christmas treats include Candied Orange and Pistachio-Crusted Lamb, Earl Grey Pork Tenderloins, Cookie Butter Cinnamon Rolls, and Eggnog Panna Cotta.

A Christmas Carol

Dates: November 20th through December 29th

Venue: The Topfer at ZACH Theatre

You may have seen the play or caught the story playing out on TV. But A Christmas Carol at the ZACH is a lively musical interpretation of the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge. After all, isn't it easier to reevaluate your life when your memories are played out in song?

Tickets range from $83 to $147, and shows are 7:30 pm with some 2:30 pm weekend matinees on the schedule as well.

Rooftop Ice Skating

Dates: November 23rd, 2019 through January 20th, 2020

Venue: Whole Foods Flagship Location

You don't have to see Santa, Rudolph, or The Nutcracker, to get a good dose of the holiday spirit. All you need is $15 and a good pair of socks.

Ice Skating at the Plaza starts at the end of November and runs through mid-January. The rooftop of the original Whole Foods is turned into a rink so you can show off your lifts and spins. Or, maybe you can just show yourself that you can balance on two thin metal blades!

You can save $3 by purchasing your ticket in advance, and admission includes skate rental.
